The Way-Back Machine
Haven’t figured out how to wire a Flux Capacitor into the family subcompact? Fear not, because time travel is as easy as jacking the Reflex Audio Clear Classic USB Joystick into your Mac or PC. Modeled on the original Atari throttle of yesteryear, this old-school hand cramper will take you on a joyride back to the golden age of gaming when Pac-Man, Q*Bert and Mr. Do! teamed up to obliterate your social life.
Unlike other vintage-inspired gamepads, the $30 Clear Classic USB is forged out of transparent plastic, which glows an icy TRON blue when in use. It also comes packaged with the Stella Atari 2600 emulator, which plays hundreds of retro ROMs downloadable from AtariAge.
But the best feature is the TV Effects toggle, which is an intentional wrench thrown into the spokes of technological progress. According to the Reflex site, “A classic 8-bit game played on a modern LCD doesn't look quite right. The colors are too precise, the graphics too angular. There's no ghosting as the TV tube lags behind the on-screen action.” Turn the TV Effects on, and your LCD runs with all of the power and performance of a faux wood-paneled '70s-era tube television. In other words, it intentionally makes your screen look crappy. Awesome!
