GCD Exclusive: Kevin Smith
With the three-movie Kevin Smith box set having been released yesterday on Blu-Ray, it seemed like the ideal time to get the inside scoop from Smith on his next comedy, the Bruce Willis/Tracy Morgan buddy cop flick A Couple of Dicks, due out this winter . . .
GCD: What’s the general premise of A Couple of Dicks?
Kevin Smith: Two cops get into a
misadventure with some Mexican nationals/gangbangers and it’s centered around
the world of hobbyists, primarily sports cards. We recently shot in a card shop that had some comic book stuff.
GCD: You were right at home.
Smith: Very much, but it was sad because it was the first
time ever in one of my movies where I had to be, like, “We have to scale back
on the comic stuff.” But yeah, so it’s a buddy cop movie. It’s the kind of
which they haven’t made in a while. It feels kind of like a Lethal Weapon, sh*t that we enjoy.
GCD: Will you have Tracy Morgan say, “I’m getting too old
for this sh*t”?
Smith: At one point we toyed with the notion, but we didn't
head down that route.
GCD: Are you a fan of Midnight Run?
Smith: It’s very much in the tone of that. I was
just thinking about that movie yesterday as I was cutting the scene because you
know how you do a temp score while you’re cutting? I was gonna use the Midnight Run score. But it’s very evocative for people who know that movie.
So you don't wanna be in a test screen situation where people are sitting there
watching the movie and they’re, like, “That’s Midnight Run. Is that Midnight
Run?”
