Collect-a-Trek
Strap on your Spock ears and splash on some Red Shirt cologne: The DVD of J.J. Abrams’ masterful Star Trek reboot is out tomorrow! Most of you will opt for the two-disc Special Edition, which includes an impressive batch of behind-the-scenes documentaries along with a holographic tour of the Enterprise unlocked by holding the packaging in front of a web cam. Anyone looking for a more concrete version of the Enterprise, should grab Amazon’s Limited Edition Replica Gift Set (pictured), which tosses an 8.5-inch hand-crafted Enterprise replica into the mix.
As collectibles go, Amazon’s set got us thinking: What is the ultimate Star Trek collectible? Thus, we decided to dig up the top three:
Captain’s chair
Sure, anyone can plop their rump into a $2,717 replica chair, but Kirk’s
original throne was sold at auction in 2002 for a cool $305,000. The
owner? Seattle’s Science Fiction Museum, funded by Microsoft bazillionaire
Paul Allen.
Enterprise-D filming
model
The most expensive piece of Trek memorabilia ever sold at auction was
a 6.5-foot model of the Enterprise, created to film the pilot of Star Trek: The Next Generation and also
used for the movie Star Trek Generations.
It went for $576,000.
William Shatner’s
kidney stone
Shatner passed the stone (otherwise known as the Captain’s
Logjam) in 2005, then sold it for the bargain price of $25,000 to the online
casino GoldenPalace.com. The stone currently sits with the site’s collection of
other oddities, such as a half-eaten grilled cheese with the face of the Virgin
Mary.
