Long Live the King!
After 12 years of death, King’s Quest is back!
When the first King’s Quest came out, it revolutionized PC games, providing the first interactive
graphic interface—never before would a computer game let your character actually
walk through rooms and pick up objects. The year was 1984 and the game was
released solely on the IBM PCjr.
Obviously, things have changed a bit since then.
Yes, the final game in the once-glorious King’s Quest franchise came out at some point in the Clinton
administration and died with a whimper. But once again, the King has risen! Go
download The Silver Lining, a
fan-made extension of the King’s Quest franchise that has been blessed by the King’s Quest copyright holder, Activision, but for legal reasons
doesn’t actually bear the King’s Quest label. Yet it does have all the same characters. In the works for eight
toil-heavy years, the sprawling new epic transports King Graham back to the
Green Isles, the setting of the franchise’s high point King’s Quest
VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow. (Sorry,
Daventry.)
The new game will be released as multiple free downloads over the
course of the year, the first of which just became available. Using the same
point-and-click interface of earlier incarnations, this newest quest sends old
man Graham off to rescue his children from a mysterious curse.
Fans will rejoice to find the King’s Quest revival recaptures all the magic of the earlier
series. The only downside: It’s not playable on the PCjr.
