Land Shark!
It took a comic book to put a shark in the woods and a bear at sea
Mother Nature used to dream up some pretty kick-ass animals.
Like the pterodactyl. That was a dinosaur that flew like a bird! Man, that
thing was awesome.
But more recently, Ma Nature’s creations could use a little
bit of tweaking. Enter Image’s one-off comic Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark. Created by Ryan Ottley (Invincible) and Jason Howard (Astounding Wolf-Man), the comic features the adventures of a shark that
attacks on land and a bear that mauls by sea. The comic’s simple tagline: “They
got mixed up.” Genius! Having a shark stalk hunters through the woods before
gruesomely devouring them is sheer pulp awesomeness. Seeing a bear terrify
fishermen from the depth of the sea is an equally absurd delight. Along with two
comic adventures (one for each creature), the book also features a prose story from Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, explaining how the two
beasts flopped hunting grounds.
While it’s nice to have Kirkman provide a creation backstory, wouldn't it have been better if these were two animals that Mother Nature had come up with on her own? Um, does a shark sh*t in the woods?
