Back to the Future!
Futurama conveniently forgets that it was canceled seven years ago
Congratulations GCD subscriber! You’ve finally done
something worthwhile! After Fox canceled Futurama in 2003, its repeats earned solid ratings on Adult
Swim and its straight-to-DVD movies racked up impressive sales. So now Futurama is back from the dead and debuting new episodes on
Comedy Central. All because fans like you were brave enough to sit on your
couch and watch it! What an accomplishment!
After a seven year hiatus, Futurama’s new season debuts tonight at 10 pm on Comedy Central
with an hour of back-to-back episodes. The premiere ep, fittingly titled
“Rebirth,” finds the gang having to get, well, reborn after a space battle
leaves them unfortunately reduced to skeletons. After that, Leela and the
super-handsome Zapp Brannigan get stranded on an Eden-like planet… naked.
So far Comedy Central has ordered 26 new Futurama episodes. Guest voices over the course of the
upcoming run will include Katee Sackhoff, George Takei, Chris Elliot, Devo,
Craig Ferguson (as a talking part of Leela’s anatomy) and Patton Oswalt, who
will be voicing a character called Unattractive Giant Monster. Hopefully he
didn’t take that casting choice personally.
Intense Futurama fans
should check out the Comedy Central Insider blog, which has been posting daily
exclusive storyboards and images from the new season. Casual fans should just
keep doing what they do best—watching TV.
